Storytelling in Social Media

Social media is a powerful communication tool that has significantly sped up trend cycles and the flow of information. Instagram and TikTok are platforms that allow people to share their photos and videos, serving as a big source of inspiration for fashion. Being customizable and flexible, anyone these days can upload their creative ideas online and get discovered.

This blog post will feature three different influencers. They each have their own niche and aesthetics, but they all find innovative ways to make content that stands out and helps them grow a following.

@tokyocityboi

@tokyocityboi shows four outfits he would wear to four different designers' fashion shows.

Seidai, also known as @tokyocityboi, makes short videos on TikTok about his taste in street style and designer fashion. In this video, he acts as a front row spectator at four different fashion shows for Gucci, Celine, Burberry, and Prada. His posture, hand gestures, and props make it easy to imagine him actually sitting front row, while the outfits and positions tell a story about each designer and the type of aesthetics they embody. It tells a story that the audience can learn from and observe, all in a 15 second clip.

@stylewithmaddi

@stylewithmaddi gets ready for the day in the 60s.

Style with Maddi is one of my favorite TikTok influencers to follow. She makes videos about vintage fashion, and constructs her own garments using sewing patterns from different decades. This video shows her getting ready as if she were in the 60s. Without using any words, the audience can see what it would be like to get dressed in the morning and what fashion styles were prominent at the time. Maddi wears hair curlers, mascara and lipstick, and a chic red dress she made using a 1960s sewing pattern.

@lilrotini

@lilrotini creates a fabulous look using an old garment she doesn't like.

Arabella, known as @lilrotini on TikTok, is an innovative fashion influencer known for her ability to take unconventional pieces and style them in a way that is cool, original, and fashion forward. She has found ways to style items including trash bags and mix-matched prints, and in this video she styles an old H&M dress. Arabella walks us through her thought process as she adds each piece of the outfit starting with the shirt, vest, belt, shoes, and finally accessories. The video serves as styling inspiration and tells a visual story of her rediscovering old garments and wearing them in a way that is trendy and innovative for the current times.

Seidai, Maddi, and Arabella are influential on social media in their own ways and tell stories with originality. Whether it be about designer runways, vintage garments, or current fashion styles, social media is an accessible way for people to get inspiration and create their own platforms to share stories with an audience.
